Air traffic at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) was halted Thursday when over 90 domestic and international flights departing and arriving in Delhi faced cancellation while airspace restrictions led to 200 additional flight delays during escalating India and Pakistan tensions according to a knowledgeable official.
The airport spokesperson stated that flights scheduled between 8am and 2pm faced cancellations. Airports canceled 79 domestic flights during this period. This included 46 departures and 33 arrivals to the Capital. In addition the flights of 11 international airlines were affected with five departures as well as six arrivals being cancelled.
The flight tracking website FlightRadar24 revealed that more than 200 flight delays occurred with an average delay of 18 minutes.
On Wednesday, 21 airports located in north and northwest India -- all close to the border between Pakistan and India -- were shut down, hours after Indian conducted precise strikes on terror infrastructure at nine locations in Pakistan and the Pakistan-occupied Kashmi as part of Operation Sindoor. These airports will remain closed until the 10th of May.
In the Delhi airport 135 flights were canceled and more than 300 were late on the Wednesday. The cancellations comprised 65 domestic departures with 66 departures as well as 4 international departures.
In a statement posted on the social media site X in the morning of Thursday at 10:00, Delhi airport operator claimed that changes in airspace conditions are still airspace restrictions.
"All activities at Delhi Airport's terminals as well as its four runways are going in the same way. However, changes in conditions in the air have affected some flights. Passengers are urged to contact their airlines to get most current information on flights," it said.
